Marzieh Amiri

Life as Disobedience

October 3-7 | Starting at $500

Marzieh Amiri, an Iranian artist based in Iceland, navigates the complex terrain of identity, religion, and gender in her work. Trained with a Master’s degree from the Iceland University of the Arts, she primarily works in illustration and visual arts, crafting pieces that are as visually striking as they are provocative.

Her art explores the lives of women under Islamic laws and the pressures these rules create. Many symbols and traditions in Islam are considered sacred and untouchable, making it difficult to question the authority they represent.

Amiri takes these symbols, such as veils and calligraphy, and turns them into tools of critique. She reveals the hidden realities of women’s lives, showing both the beauty of these cultural forms and the ways they have been used to control and limit women.

Her work balances respect and disruption, engaging with these symbols while also exposing the harsh truths behind them. In doing so, Amiri opens a space for reflection, dialogue, and resistance, inviting viewers to see the tension between tradition, power, and freedom.

The opening of Marzieh’s exhibition will be accompanied by a talk between the artist and Kjartan Orri Þórsson, an expert on Iran and its history. The talk will be led by the curator and gallerist Snærós Sindradóttir.
